Here is an other variant : each player can, before making the first move, give up one bishop and change it into a knight.
From a theoretical point of view, that would a slight material loss, thus a kind of gambit, since two bishops are considered superior than two knights. But a player who likes the idea of having three knights can chose that anyway as he may have personal ideas on how to exploit the situation.
